Workin' on the Chain Gang

Paul Cauthen grew up in the ultra-conservative Church of Christ, and took pride as a part of the church’s exceptional chorus. So as an adult he felt very out of place when his life took a turn for the worst and he found himself incarcerated in a Texas jail, working on a chain gang. He didn’t really know how to deal with the situation...except to sing.

Paul now heads the band, Sons of Fathers. They just put out a new album called “Burning Days.” You’ve gotta check it out. They’re on tour now across the United States.

Kasparov vs. Deep Blue

In 1997, Deep Blue, a computer designed by IBM, took on the undefeated world chess champion, Garry Kasparov. Kasparov lost. And at the time, some argued that this meant that computers had progressed to be “smarter” than humans. But recently, Murray Campbell, one of the engineers who designed Deep Blue, came out with a little-known factoid that challenges the assumptions we made.

We found Murray’s story in Nate Silver’s book, The Signal and the Noise. And thanks so much to Mig Greengard to speaking to us on Kasparov’s behalf.
